2025 SYC Annual Prizegiving

SYC held our annual prizegiving at the Year end function on the 8th of November
We received a number of nominations for the different awards and it was surprising the our sailors had such diverse achievements
The following awards were presented:
Yachtsman of the year- Damian Muller.
Damian campaigned his J22 and Pacer 27 in a number of events in the past season. He and his team represented SYC at the Lipton Cup Challenge in August which was held in Cape town on J22’s. The SYC team finished 14th from 18 entries. Damian was also SA Sailing Northern Region yachtsman of the year for the 2024 -2025 season.

Yachtswoman of the year- Shellee Nel
Shellee participated in a number of Keelboat events with her husband on the Dragonfly and they finished  4th overall and First lady Skipper in the 2025 Dart National championships

Junior Yachtsman of the year – shared between Aydin O Hara and James Tanner
Aydin has had a successful year on the ILCA 6 with great results the Youth Nationals, Gauteng and KZN provincials.
James qualified for the South African Optimist team that participated int African Optimist championships in Tanzania. He also achieved podium results at the KZN Provincials and Gauteng provincials
James was also awarded the “Best result outside of SYC”.


Junior Yachtswoman of the Year – Ingrid Holm
This award was closely contested between Ingrid and Lena Holm both of whom achieved excellent results in the ILCA 6 Class. In addition, Ingrid won the ILCA6 class at the SA Sailing Youth Nationals.

Veteran of the year- Ben Mienie

Screw up of the year – Harry Basson

Most improved sailor of the year- Tony Brinsford

Most improved team of the year- Charde and John Corlett
